Dandadan Episode 9: "Merge! Serpo Dover Demon Nessie" Recap
This episode of Dandadan kicks off with the lingering romantic tension from the previous episode. Remember the misunderstanding where Ayase found Okarun seemingly on top of Aira? Yeah, that’s still hanging in the air. But before they can fully address it, BAM! Serpoians attack, plunging the school into a watery chaos. The school itself isn’t just flooded; it’s transforming into a watery abyss, with every surface slowly turning into water – a truly terrifying visual. Adding to the nightmare fuel, the aliens are pulling our trio into this watery hellscape.
The comedic element hits hard immediately because Okarun is completely naked in this underwater battle. His struggle to find even a scrap of clothing amidst the chaos, while being hunted by aliens who seem particularly interested in his, uh, private parts, is undeniably hilarious. The creative blocking of his anatomy only adds to the absurdity.
But while Okarun’s preoccupied with his lack of clothing, Aira shines. She’s transformed into her Acrobatic Silky form, effortlessly graceful and powerful. Her transformation, unlike Okarun’s Turbo Granny form, allows more of her bubbly personality to show through. The visual differences in their transformations are striking, with Aira’s mask being more expressive than Okarun’s.
The coolest part? Their transformed forms interact! Okarun’s speed and Aira’s acrobatic attacks combine in a literal, hilarious underwater tango. Even Okarun’s usually grumpy transformed self can’t help but participate in this bizarre dance. The chemistry between their transformed selves, enhanced by Kikuko Inoue’s captivating voice for Aira, is undeniable.
The episode’s climax is a battle against a monstrous creature – the Loch Ness Monster! Nessie, with its Godzilla-esque laser beam, adds a surprising twist to the already chaotic underwater battle. The setting, the monster, and the sheer absurdity of the situation all combine to make for a truly memorable fight sequence.
Ayase continues to prove she’s the MVP. Her psychic powers and strategic thinking are what save the day. She brilliantly uses a lesson learned in class to defeat the aliens. Before the final showdown, Okarun and Ayase finally clear the air about the misunderstanding from last week. It’s a sweet, albeit brief, moment of genuine connection amidst the chaos. Okarun’s heartfelt desire to be honest with Ayase and his request for her honesty in return is a poignant moment.
The episode ends with the trio victorious, but the lingering question remains: what will the aftermath of this intense battle and near-drowning experience bring for our characters? The next episode promises more revelations and emotional developments.
