The Fiery Priest: Episodes 1-2 Recap
The explosive opening of The Fiery Priest Season 2 starts with a bang at Gudam Temple. Thugs arrive to intimidate the monks, but one monk has other plans—underneath his robes, he’s revealed as none other than our fiery hero, KIM HAE-IL. With his usual blend of fierce justice and wit, he takes down the goons, proclaiming, “Both God and Buddha are telling me to beat you up.” This sets the tone for another wild ride with Hae-il and his colorful crew.
Meet the Crew Again
We quickly reconnect with familiar faces: SISTER KIM cheats at Monopoly, sweet priest HAN SUNG-KYU rages at a confessor who abuses the concept of forgiveness, and the lovable SSONGSAK manages his delivery squad with police-like pride. OH YO-HAN remains loyal to his convenience store, and bumbling detective GU DAE-YOUNG is as eccentric as ever. Meanwhile, prosecutor PARK KYUNG-SEON seems far from homesick, lounging poolside in LA, enjoying her “break.”
During a peaceful dinner with the squad, Hae-il is perched atop the kimchi fridge, warning that tranquility never lasts. True to his words, tragedy strikes when a beloved young churchgoer, LEE SANG-YEON, collapses after a memorial mass for the late Father Lee. The hospital’s grim diagnosis reveals Sang-yeon has suffered brain damage from an apparent drug overdose. Suspicious, Hae-il refuses to believe Sang-yeon took drugs voluntarily.
Hae-il Takes Action
Determined to get justice, Hae-il confronts the young dealers responsible, including their ringleader JANG SHI-TAE, who reveals they force-fed Sang-yeon drugs after he caught them in the act. Through a hilarious display of intimidation, Hae-il and Dae-young push Shi-tae into giving up a name: “Gerald.” This sends Hae-il, Dae-young, and Ssongsak on a hunt that leads to a brilliantly choreographed fight, full of humor and intense action.
The Busan Connection
Realizing this case goes deeper, Hae-il heads to Busan, supposedly for a teaching gig, but actually to chase leads on the “Busan Fire Eel,” a new crime boss. Meanwhile, prosecutor NAM DU-HEON works with the drug-dealing Yongsa gang, even plotting to pin the blame on minor celebrities to protect higher-ups. It’s clear this crime network won’t be easy to dismantle.
Enter KIM HONG-SHIK, the feared head honcho of the Yongsa gang, who openly reminisces about his brutal past. Upon landing, he immediately establishes dominance, freezing a corrupt cop and taking down a detective to send a chilling message. Clearly, Busan’s underworld isn’t for the faint of heart.
New Allies and New Challenges
As Hae-il digs deeper, he reluctantly teams up with mini-rebel priest CHAE DO-WOO, who has a similar penchant for justice, albeit unrefined. We also get a hilarious scene in LA, where Kyung-seon unwittingly dates a drug trafficker, ending in a shootout. Rescued by a Vatican priest, she learns Hae-il’s title, “Bellator,” marking him as a warrior of justice for the Vatican, while her role as his “Comes” (companion) links her fate with his.
The stakes get higher as Hae-il learns he’s developed multiple sclerosis from past trauma, with his condition worsening under stress. For now, though, his commitment to justice overrides his health concerns. He’s unwilling to back down, even with the risks.
What’s next?
Episodes 1 and 2 are a rollercoaster reuniting us with beloved characters and setting the stage for a larger battle. With Hae-il on a collision course with Busan’s darkest criminals, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the squad joins him. And if the hilarious, action-packed epilogues are any hint, the laughs and high-stakes action are only getting started!
